About the Report
Produced by a global team of leading scientists and experts, the 10 New Insights in Climate Science synthesizes the most critical advances in climate research from the past 18 months.
A joint initiative by Future Earth, The Earth League, and the World Climate Research Programme, the report strives to be a trusted source of evidence-based information on the most pressing findings in climate research.
Why it Matters
Since 2017, this annual report highlights 10 key recent findings to help leaders, policymakers, journalists and others stay informed. It translates complex research into accessible, concise insights to inform high-stakes decisions.
By focusing on the latest scientific knowledge, the 10 New Insights in Climate Science offers practical guidance for addressing climate change, supporting ambitious policy, and fostering resilience and adaptation across society as we grapple with a warming planet.
How It’s Made
Each year, dozens of leading natural and social scientists review the most recent literature to identify the 10 annual insights, selected for their scientific rigor, policy relevance, and potential impact.
These insights cover pivotal issues such as climate extremes, mitigation, adaptation, social equity, and resilience. Since 2020, the insights are also featured in a peer-reviewed article that has been published as a “review paper” in an open-access journal. Read the latest academic manuscript (preprint).
An editorial board makes the scientific and communications decisions for the 10 New Insights in Climate Science. The board comprises more than a dozen members who are chosen for their scientific excellence in relevant fields. Board members change from year to year and have diverse academic backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and nationalities.
The report is presented annually around key climate events, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP), amplifying its reach and influence.
Who Oversees It
The 10 New Insights in Climate Science series is a collaborative initiative between Future Earth, The Earth League and the World Climate Research Programme.
Future Earth is a global network of researchers developing and synthesizing knowledge to support transformations towards sustainability. With a strong focus on systems-based approaches, Future Earth seeks to deepen our understanding of complex Earth systems and human dynamics across different disciplines and leverage this understanding to underpin evidence-based policies and strategies for sustainable development.
The Earth League is an international alliance of institutional and individual members, who work together to respond to issues such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, land degradation, water scarcity, and food security. While addressing existing and emerging problems created by resource use beyond our planet’s capacity, the Earth League explores how problems can be anticipated and avoided through strategic action and innovation.
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) coordinates and guides international climate research to develop, share, and apply climate knowledge that contributes to societal well-being. Through international science coordination and successful partnerships, WCRP addresses aspects of climate science that are too large and too complex to be tackled by a single nation, agency, or scientific discipline.
